I was delighted to be the preacher at St Hilda's Audenshaw for their patronal festival. I first knew of this parish when the 'Diary of a Misfit Priest' appeared on a shelf in Hyde Library in 1960. It was written by Fr W Rowland Jones who was parish priest at St Hilda's from 1930 until 1952. It made arresting reading and was helpful to my path to catholic understanding.
Nine of us came from St Thomas' to a very special evening, indeed everything was splendid. The church building is dual purpose but in the words of Kenny Everett, of blessed memory, it's all in the best possible taste. The mass was uplifting and the refreshments were outstanding. All was conveyed in a most generous spirit reflecting Fr John's long and faithful presence, bringing the best out of everyone.
